The Spanish population exceeds 46 million, an increase over 2007
Spain has 46,157,822 inhabitants, according to final data for the census to January 1, 2008, showing that the population has increased in all regions, especially in the Balearic Islands, Castilla La Mancha, Madrid and Valencia.
According to official figures, released yesterday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), in January there were 957,085 people registered voters than a year earlier, resulting in an increase of 2.12 percent.
The most increased their number of inhabitants in absolute terms were Madrid (189 949 people registered over the previous year), Catalonia (153,570) and Valencia (144 572). The smallest increase their population percentage in that time interval was Galicia (0.42% increase), followed by Asturias (0.49%), Extremadura and the Basque Country, both with a rise of 0.71 percent.
In absolute terms, Andalusia is the most populated range, with 8.2 million people, ahead of Catalonia (7.36), Madrid (6.27) and Valencia (5.02 million). For its part, the least populated regions are La Rioja (317,501 people) and Navarre (620 377). In the only provinces that has descended population are Orense, which lost 827 people and Zamora, where there have been low in the register 16 individuals. Given these data, the provinces which has grown the number of people are Guadalajara (an increase of 6.12%) and Toledo (4.78%).
According to the published forward six months and waiting for the official data of the immigrant population in Spain has registered more than 5.2 million foreigners, 15.5 percent more than in 2007. The immigrant population growth is common to all communities, more pronounced in Castilla y León, Castilla La Mancha and Aragon.
